The company is quite responsive to questions, whether before purchase or during installation. They even ask for the brand of your bike and a photo to ensure compatibility. The paper template provided already helps confirm this.
The Spiny was very well-packaged and protected.
Their website claims installation takes a maximum of fifteen minutes, which seems a bit optimistic in my experience given the necessary adjustments (mounting, height, calibration, app, Bluetooth). The mounting bracket that screws onto the frame is asymmetrical and can be flipped 180° to modify the distance between the frame and the tire to adjust the Spiny.
My primary goal was to be able to keep up, especially on steep climbs, with the cyclists in my club where almost all of the hundred members have an e-bike. After a few group rides, I must say the Spiny does the job; I manage to keep up easily thanks to the boost from the Spiny motor and its 35 Nm of torque. With this in mind, the battery life is sufficient—I consume about 5% of the battery on each major climb.
The Bluetooth remote is surprisingly small (3x2 cm) and can be difficult to handle with gloves. It clips onto the handlebars (no screws), making it more fragile and easier to steal if not systematically removed. There is no indication of the assistance level or battery charge on it. The assistance level is shown by lights on the side of the battery, which aren't very visible to the rider. If you feel these lights compromise discretion, they can be turned off via the remote—which is the only way to do so, just like cutting the motor, as this isn't possible through the app.
This is the advantage of the remote: it allows you to do without a smartphone, leaving it free for navigation.
The motor makes a bit more noise than a standard e-bike, especially when the motor is cut and the lever flips up abruptly (clack).
In just a few seconds, the Spiny can be removed and taken with you, which is the best anti-theft measure!
Since the charger is very compact, it's easy to take along on touring trips.
Another advantage is that when the motor is disengaged, the roller does not rub against the tire at all.
Speaking of the tire, based on previous reviews, a slight downside is premature wear. I’ll see how it holds up over time.
Conclusion: The Spiny is a well-designed motor kit that is highly adaptable to most bikes. It’s a great compromise between a traditional bike and an e-bike when you still have enough "leg power"!
