CICLOSFERA Have you thought about turning your conventional bike into an electric bike? Here is this test of Spiny, an electrification kit that can be installed in just a few minutes and claims to be the lightest on the market. Simple, pretty, practical and for less than €500. Is there any catch? Don't miss our video!

In Spiny  They are clear: "we were born with the vocation of promoting urban cycling" assures us Marco Cocchiarella, co-founder of the brand. And they are right. The Spiny is a simple device with a very easy installation that you can remove and put on in five seconds (we promise) to continue having your usual bike with or without assistance, because we don't need a motor every day.

What we have before us is the lightest electric conversion kit on the market. And that's saying a lot, because there are dozens of models. Not only that, but Spiny's design also allows for something that not many can say: when you remove it from the frame, with one click, you take everything with you, i.e. the motor and the battery. And it looks very attractive too!

Spiny comes complete, even with the tools you may need for installation.

In most of the solutions we have seen so far, at least those that have the motor in the wheel, the only thing you could easily remove and put on was the battery and the bike was still left with the extra weight of the motor.

The Spiny design hides another secret: its location. It is located at the point where the motor is most efficient, right there, under the saddle, halfway up the vertical tube of the frame. At that specific point, the force that the motor has to exert to obtain much more power is less, making the battery last even longer.

Satisfactory autonomy

In fact, in terms of autonomy, according to the brand's data, you can reach up to 50 kilometers. It is true, and we have already told you this several times, that these figures are always on paper and that, sometimes, they do not usually reach that much, since they depend on the level of assistance you choose, on your weight and that of the bike and, of course, on the orography you are going to travel (the more hills you have to climb, the more effort the battery will make).

Our experience with Spiny in this regard is very satisfactory and we have done 25km with the highest level of assistance (there are three different ones) and we still had some battery left. That is to say, if you don't demand too much from the motor, if you put in a little effort when pedalling, you have more than enough autonomy for urban journeys, which is what Spiny is designed for.

The Spiny conversion kit is priced online at €499

By little and for many

Spiny is available at a retail price of €599, but those who decide to buy it on-line You can take advantage of the fact that it is only €499. This also gives Spiny another medal: that of having an almost unbeatable quality-price ratio.

Installing the Spiny stand is not complicated at all.

But is it suitable for your bike? Well, it has to be very rare for it not to be suitable. In any case, at Spiny you get your money back if your bike is not compatible or if you are not completely convinced by the product. Now, we can tell you in advance that you are going to love it, just like we do.

Its ability to adapt to practically any conventional bicycle on the market is astonishing: fixie, road, city, MTB, touring... And part of its charm is that you might want to have it on two bikes. Why not?

Spiny is compatible with the vast majority of bicycles on the market

The reasons why you may need a Spiny There can be endless reasons: because you don't want to get rid of your usual bike, because you don't want to spend a fortune on an electric one, because you don't have room for another bike, because you don't always want to use an electric one and with Spiny you can easily dismantle the system... Or, simply because you feel like it.

Having said all this, let's see how we install a Spiny on our conventional bike.

Installing Spiny will take just a few minutes.

Spiny: step-by-step installation

The first thing we will see when we open the Spiny box when it arrives at our home is a QR code with the instructions for installing it. Well explained, simple, step by step, without complications.

You have to remove the piece that will hold the Spiny to your frame and screw it in at the right height. So that you don't have to hold the Spiny with one hand and try to screw the piece in with the other, the package includes a cardboard guide so you can do it easily. By the way, the Allen key is included, which is really appreciated.

Everything you need to install the Spiny on your bike comes in the box, tools included.

If your bike has the rear brake or shifter wiring in that part of the frame, don't worry, the Spiny part is designed so that both can pass through without touching anything on the device. Everything will work as it always has, but now with help.

The clamp is responsible for being able to remove and put on your Spiny in 5 seconds, it will be the only piece of the kit that remains on your bike.

If you have mudguards, one of the best solutions you can do to install Spiny is to cut them. Yes, it's that easy. You'll only have to reduce the length of the piece by cutting from the brake caliper to the end, that way, you'll still have the really useful part of the mudguard available and working, avoiding splashes on your back or saddlebags and with your electrification kit at full performance.

You can also keep your rear fender.

Cutting parts of the bike is a very common practice, and it is very common to shorten the handlebars, so the mudguard should not be a concern at all.

Once we have the piece in place on the frame (as simple as putting on a bottle cage) we slide the motor and we will hear a "click". But we are still missing the cadence and speed sensors.

Before installing the two sensors, we recommend that you download the app and grant it all the permissions it asks for regarding location, Bluetooth, etc., because it will be useful to have everything ready at this time.

Spiny includes a key for added security.

Both sensors have a button cell battery, and even though it is inserted, there is a plastic cover that you must remove for them to start working. Turn on the motor (by pressing the central button with the red lightning bolt, the Spiny logo) and open the app.

Remove both plastics that isolate the battery and you will see that it turns on. Having our Spiny and the app running previously, you will see that everything connects by itself and a little blue light turns on on both devices. Everything is (almost) ready.

Install the cadence sensor on the left crank of your bike, using the clamps provided, and do the same with the speed sensor on the rear hub of your bike. You're almost ready to enjoy it all.

The motor exerts force directly on the tire, avoiding wear or friction on any other part of the bike.

With the Spiny app open, you will have to go into the settings and connect the sensors. Once you have done this, only the kilometres of happiness await you on your usual bike but with the magic that electric assistance brings.

Under way

The sensations are good from the first pedal stroke, the assistance, at first, can be a bit abrupt, but you quickly get used to it and it offers the help you were expecting from your bike.

The speed and cadence sensors, connected to the motor and your app, are responsible for cutting off assistance when we stop pedaling or when we reach 25 km/h and they do their job perfectly.

Aesthetically it is very well done, making your bike keep the same look as always.

We don't notice that the bike weighs much more, those two extra kilos, right on the vertical tube, probably in the best place to add weight to our bike, are not very noticeable and even less so when it starts to work. Spiny .

The advantage of weight is that you can get into any elevator with our brand new electric bike, climb any stairs or, if you want to lock it on the street, remove the Spiny in 5 seconds.

Conclusions

An electric conversion kit can be a fantastic solution to get assistance on your regular bike without having to shell out a lot of money. Spiny It is the lightest on the market, has an extraordinary quality/price ratio (€499 if you buy it online) and is very, very easy to install.

If you have thought about electrifying your regular bike, we recommend that you have Spiny very much into account.

Testing the Spiny Electric Conversion Kit (€499)

It is smooth, very easy to install, at an affordable price, with simple operation and a careful aesthetic, to which we must add that it barely weighs two kilos, which makes it the lightest on the market. It is a good option if you need to add extra help to your regular bike without having to buy a new e-bike. It has enough autonomy for day-to-day use in normal urban use and all the software is updatable via app. 100% recommended.
